JAMMU, Jan 31: Emotional tributes were paid to the martyrs of 1953 Praja Parishad agitation at an event organised by Praja Parishad Memorial Trust at Jourian in which Advisor to Lieutenant Governor, Farooq Khan, BJP president for J&K, Ravinder Raina and former Deputy Chief Minister, Nirmal Singh were the chief guests.
Several other BJP leaders and prominent civil society members also attended the event which witnessed announcement of a Sports Stadium for Jourian by the Advisor Khan.
Recalling the supreme sacrifice made by patriotic martyrs, who laid down their lives during the 1953-Praja Parishad agitation in Akhnoor, Advisor Khan paid rich tribute to the martyrs.
On this occasion Kissan Mela was also organised to commemorate sacrifices of those who laid down their lives during Praja Parishad agitation.
“The Union Territory Government has decided to establish a sports stadium in Jourian to encourage the youth of the area to take to the sports activities, said Farooq Khan. Sports are not a great avenue for the youth but also keeps them away from ill habits such as drugs,” Khan added.
He assured early construction of the Stadium. Regarding other demands, he assured that these will also be fulfilled shortly.
In his address, BJP president, Ravinder Raina said that the Praja Parishad agitation of 1953 was launched with the slogan — ‘Ek Vidhan-Ek Nishan-Ek Pradhan’ to ensure full integration of J&K with the rest of the country.
“The patriots have come together to fight against the Permit System, under which anyone wishing to visit then State had to obtain a permit and even sacrificed their life. Their sacrifice will always be remembered. It brings tears to my eyes that it was only after almost seven decades later that the BJP Government fulfilled their dream of ‘Ek Vidhan-Ek Nishan-Ek Pradhan’ when it abrogated the special status of Jammu and Kashmir,” said Raina.
Speaking on the occasion, former Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Nirmal Singh said, “The real tribute has been paid to these martyrs by the bold and historic decision of the abrogation of Articles 370 & 35(A) by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi-led Government.”
“We believe that their souls are at peace today in the heavens,” he added.
Prominent among others who were present on the occasion were former legislators R S Pathania, Rajiv Sharma and Krishan Lal, DDC members Sharda Bhau, Bushan Bral, Suraj Singh, Suresh Sharma and several eminent members of the civil society.
