SRINAGAR, Sept 15: After the arrest of a leader of hardline Huriyat Conference for hatching conspiracy to kill a Sarpanch in North Kashmir, Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani today strongly opposed the killing of Panchs and Sarpanchs allegedly by militants in Kashmir.
Police said they have arrested Nasir Ahmad Ganie alias Nasir Molvi son of Ghulam Mohammad Ganie of Raipora Palhallan, Pattan in district Baramulla who they claimed was involved in abetment and criminal conspiracy of the murder of Sarpanch Ghulam Mohammad Yatoo.
Yatoo was killed by militants early this week in Palhallan village leading to the resignation of scores of Panchs and Sarpanchs in the area. Police alleged that he has been found involved in the case FIR No. 207/2012 under Sections 302 RPC, 7/27 A Act registered in Police Station, Pattan.
Geelani accused the Government of falsely implicating Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Tehsil president Abdullah Nasir in the killing of Yatoo. He said that by connecting Nasir with the killing, the Government is planning to impose a ban on Tehreek.
The hardline Hurriyat Chairman Geelani strongly opposed the killing of Panchs and Sarpanchs in the State. He said that his party fovoured fighting politicians politically.
Geelani said that his party did not believe in violence and favoured fighting politicians including Panchs and Sarpanchs politically.
Over 20 Panchs and Sarpanchs were targeted by militants since last year’s Panchayat elections out of whom near a dozen died while others were grievously injured. The targeting of Panchs and Sarpanchs by militants forced hundreds of them to resign.
Militants had earlier warned the Panchs and Sarpanchs to resign or face the consequences.
