Srinagar, May 1: The residents of several areas, including Gang Bugh Bypass, Galwanpora, Laloo Sheshgari Bagh, Gulshan Abad, and Gurteng in Srinagar, are suffering due to an incomplete drainage project started several years ago.
According to details shared by the residents, the mega project commenced in the year 2017-2018 through the ERA worth Rs 14 crores; however, despite several years passing, it remains unfinished.
“The work was initiated under the AMRUT Scheme in the area, aiming to align the outflow towards Doodh-Ganga Nallah Gang Bugh. A site near the wooden bridge of the Doodh Ganga Nallah was identified by the concerned department,” said Muhammad Sultan Bhat, President Muhalla Committee.
The residents mentioned that a significant portion of the sump works was constructed by the contractor, but due to a land dispute, work on the sump project came to a halt.
“This is the spot from which drainage water was proposed to be drained out; the dispute arose two years ago, resulting in the machinery and material of the agency lying idle on the disputed spot,” the residents explained.
Another resident, Abdul Hamid Dar, stated that in the year 2021, the Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar visited the spot along with all field functionaries, “but the issue remains unresolved to till date.”
The halt in the work has led to the stagnation of raw sewage in the drains, often resulting in accumulation on the link roads, residents said.
“We are suffering, and whenever there is heavy downpour, the lanes and bylanes leading to these areas get submerged; we appeal to the authorities to ensure the resolution of the issue at the earliest,” the residents pleaded.
