JAMMU, May 11: A review meeting was held regarding the promotion of `UN Sustainable Development Goals’, for which Gandhi Peace Foundation (GPF) Jammu Chapter and Gandhi Global Family (GGF), under the aegis of United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) New Delhi, have joined hands with 17 schools of Jammu.
In today’s annual review meet, held at Jodhamal Public School Jammu, each school representative gave power point presentation of allotted goals.
Alexander Memorial School having the goal of ‘No Poverty’, highlighted the outreach activities initiated by the school, including visit to Bal Bharti School Nagrota and Prem Nagar Colony Jammu. Based on the goal of ‘Zero Hunger’ GD Goenka School in its presentation, highlighted the activities like special assemblies , Poster making and interactive sessions, organised by the school.
Tiny Tots Senior Secondary School, with its allotted goal ‘Good Health & Well-Being’ had organised awareness drives regarding mal nutrition, mental awareness, etc. Jodhamal Public School with its goal on ‘Clean Water & Sanitation’ highlighted its contribution towards rain water harvesting system. Lawrence Public School with its goal of ‘Decent Work & Economic Growth’ talked about the self help groups formed in this regard. British International School with goal of `Sustainable Cities and Communities’ highlighted visits to orphanage and the other activities organised like symposiums and Poster making. Model Academy with its goal ‘Life Under Water’ highlighted the adoption of Government Middle School Digiana. KC International School highlighted the kind of role and steps initiated in improving the working conditions of village Bhagat Pur which they had adopted. Jammu Sanskriti School with its goal of ‘Gender Equality’ had organised World Book & Copyright Day, International Labour Day, World Press Freedom Day, Save Girl Child activity, etc.
Padamshree S P Varma, vice pesident of Gandhi Global Family, J&K, in his address, expressed satisfaction over the manner in which the sincere efforts were being made by the schools towards implementation of the SDGs. He further expressed that if the schools continue to move with this level of dedication and sincerity in taking up social responsibility, the might be selected to represent Jammu at national or international level.
Dr Seema Rohmetra, Coordinator of Gandhi Peace Foundation Jammu Chapter, coordinated the meet and made certain observatory remarks wherein she talked about certain strategies and mechanisms through which schools can contribute in a bigger way towards such noble causes. She further asserted that the role of parenting and education is challenging in the contemporary era of consumerism. “The schools and parents have to invest their energies upon developing good human beings rather than building simply technocrats and professionals. So they have to come forward in sensitising the children and youth towards such SDG promotion initiatives,” she said.
Among others, who attended the meet, included Nandan Kuthiala and Arti Kuthiala, Ankush Varma, R Robin Gill, Dr Sapna Sangra (Co- coordinator Gandhi Peace Foundation Jammu Chapter), Dr Monica Narang and Dr Rajneesh Khajuria.
Vice Principal of Jodhamal Public School presented the formal vote of thanks.
