Free bird Mehbooba Mufti meets Kashmiri leaders, agrees to be part of Gupkar delegation

SRINAGAR: After meeting Ms Mehbooba, Omar Abdullah said the PDP president has accepted the invitation to join a meeting of the Gupkar Declaration signatories on Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, regional and national political leaders have welcomed her release.

A PDP spokesperson said Dr Farooq and Omar Abdullah, both former chief ministers, met Ms Mehbooba at her residence in the afternoon. “Besides them, several PDP leaders and workers met the part president on Wednesday,” he said.

“My father & I called on @MehboobaMufti Sahiba this afternoon to enquire about her well-being after her release from detention. She has kindly accepted Farooq Sb’s invitation to join a meeting of the Gupkar Declaration signatories tomorrow afternoon,” Mr Abdullah wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.

Ms Mehbooba was late on Tuesday evening released after remaining under detention for over 14 months. The former chief minister was released after the J&K administration late on Tuesday evening revoked Public Safety Act (PSA) imposed on her.

Soon after her release, many political leaders took to twitter to express their happiness over her release. “I’m pleased to hear that @MehboobaMufti Sahiba has been released after more than a year in detention. Her continued detention was a travesty & was against the basic tenets of democracy. Welcome out Mehbooba,” Mr Abdullah tweeted.

Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram wrote, “Happy that Ms Mehbooba Mufti has been finally released after 14 months of unjustified detention.”

“I’m pleased to hear that @MehboobaMufti has been released from detention after 14 months. I urge the Govt to release all other political detainees as well. The democratic processes, which have been suspended during this time, must also be reinstated,” DMK president M K Stalin tweeted.

“Glad to hear that @MehboobaMufti has finally been released from the unlawful detention. We urge the authorities to release other people who continue to be under detention since 04 Aug 2019 under draconian laws like PSA, UAPA and sedition,” senior CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami said.

“@MehboobaMufti has apparently been released. Great news. She has been through a very tough time. Wishing her all the best,” Peoples Conference chairman Sajad Lone tweeted.

Meanwhile, welcoming the release of Mehbooba, Apni Party president Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari called for release of all other political detainees who are lodged in and outside J&K jails.

Mr Bukhari observed that the government’s move to release Ms Mufti, though delayed, is a significant step in the right direction. He, however, demanded immediate release of hundreds of political detainees who are still in jails and some of whom are lodged outside J&K since August 5, 2019.

Ms Mehbooba, Former chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah, besides dozens of mainstream leaders, including ex-ministers, were detained on August 5, 2019, when centre abrogated Article 370 and Article 35 A, besides bifurcated the state into two Union Territories.

The PDP president was later booked under the PSA and stayed in solitary confinement for over eight months.

Dr Farooq, who is MP from Srinagar, was released in March after remaining under detention for about seven months. Days later, Omar Abdullah was also released after about eight month detention.

However, Mehbooba Mufti was on April shifted from a Srinagar sub-jail to her official residence, where she was detained under PSA. The act against other political leaders was also revoked and they were released though they remained under house arrest. The detention of Mehbooba under PSA was again extended for three months on July 31. (AGENCIES)
