JAMMU, May 20: Fortis Hospital Amritsar successfully treated a 46-year-old woman suffering from septic shock, acute kidney failure, jaundice and severe respiratory distress, helping her recover completely and become dialysis-free after intensive critical care management.
This was stated by a team of doctors and officials today while addressing a press conference at Jammu. They informed that the woman was admitted to the hospital after being referred from a local medical facility in an extremely critical condition.
Upon arrival, the patient was diagnosed with septic shock accompanied by dangerously low blood pressure, acute kidney injury, jaundice and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). A multidisciplinary medical team led by Dr Fayaz Ahmad Wani, Senior Consultant, Nephrology, Dr Aseem Watts, Consultant, Gastroenterology and Dr Ashish Jain, Additional Director, Critical Care, identified severe gastroenteritis as the root cause that had triggered sepsis and subsequent organ failure.
The patient required intensive treatment, including five sessions of hemodialysis to support failing kidneys, ventilator support for respiratory distress and intravenous antibiotics to control the infection. After 15 days of comprehensive treatment and close monitoring in the intensive care unit, her condition improved significantly and she was discharged in a stable condition.
Dr Fayaz said that sepsis can rapidly affect multiple organs if not treated promptly and stressed the importance of early diagnosis, aggressive management and coordinated multidisciplinary care in saving critically ill patients.
Dr Aseem Watts said the patient’s case was particularly significant because despite severe acute kidney failure and dependence on dialysis during treatment, her kidney function recovered completely.
He informed that at follow-up her serum creatinine level had improved to 0.88 mg/dL and she was leading a healthy life without dialysis or medication.
Dr Ashish Jain described the case as highly challenging due to severe sepsis and multi-organ failure, adding that continuous intensive care support and timely intervention played a vital role in reversing the condition.
Yogesh Joshi, Facility Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Amritsar, said the successful recovery reflected the hospital’s advanced critical care infrastructure, multidisciplinary expertise and patient-centred approach.
