Srinagar, June 19: After remaining off the news for quite a time now, the former Deputy Mayor, Srinagar, Sheikh Muhammad Imran along with three others today secured entry in the SMC’s Executive Committee (EC).
As per details, there were four vacant seats in the Corporation’s Executive Committee—which is the apex body where the developmental plans are deliberated and implemented—and to fill those up, the elections were held today.
As per the results, the SMC Corporator from Lal Bazar, Danish Bhat, Kralkhud Corporator Nazir Gilkar who comes from BJP, Batamaloo Corporator Shafat Gaffar from Congress and Sheikh Muhammad Imran, fighting the election as an independent candidate, secured their slots in the apex body.
Interestingly, several party candidates are alleging that their members “cheated” them because the figures reveal that the BJP had one member and was successful in getting the support of over 11 members. Similarly, Congress had 17 members; however, its candidate got one vote.
In the meantime, the victory of Sheikh Muhammad Imran has come as a surprise to the big-wigs who were sure of securing their slots during the election, as apparently, Imran does not enjoy the support of any political party as of now.
Also, the official candidate of the Congress for the elections of Executive Committee, Asif Beigh, has alleged “back-stabbing” by Chief Whip Basharat Qadir and is mulling to approach the Party High-Command.
However, Sheikh Imran has said that “like-minded” people supported him in securing a seat in the Executive Committee and the move was aimed at “eradicating corruption” from the Corporation.
