SRINAGAR, Nov 21: The former chairman of Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE), Mushtaq Ahmad Peer, is likely to be arrested by the Crime Branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police by this weekend.
Crime Branch sources said that Peer is the prime accused in the Common Entrance Test (CET)- 2012 scam and his arrest is likely to be made in a couple of days. “We have a tight case against him and we are gathering more information from him before he will be formally arrested probably by this weekend”, the sources said.
Since Peer is politically well connected and was re-employed couple of times by the Government for his political connections, Crime Branch did not want to leave any lacunae in this case.
Peer was questioned by the sleuths of the Crime Branch today for the second day regarding scam in which he established a separate paid CET-2012 centre for around 30 students in a local hotel here.
Sources said that questions were asked about his moveable and immovable property and money he has generated through fraudulent means.
Inspector General of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Crime Branch, Syed Javed Mujtaba Geelani, told Excelsior that Peer was questioned for the second day today by the Crime Branch sleuths. He was let off in the evening and his questioning will continue tomorrow.
Geelani said that few students were also questioned by the Crime Branch investigating team.
Crime Branch has already arrested a person Sajad Ahmad Bhat who is accused in the scam. Bhat is from Anantnag and has a consultancy dealing with admissions with its office in Bangalore.
Earlier, this week Peer’s residences were raided at Srinagar and Jammu and documents regarding his immovable property were recovered. Raids were conducted after Crime Branch established that he is the main accused in the scam.
Around 30 candidates are under Crime Branch scanner and it is believed that they have paid over Rs 12 crore to Peer and his associates for establishing a special centre for them. However, so far only Crime Branch has established 12 candidates who had paid money for getting admission in MBBS.
