Food adulteration

As per information provided by various State Governments in Parliament, the number of food samples analysed is 72,200 out of which 13,571 have been found adulterated and misbranded in 2013-14, Consumer Affairs Minister said. This is very disappointing state of affairs. What can be gleaned from the statement of the Minister is that Consumer Affairs being a subject of State List, the Centre finds that existing laws are good enough to take care of the adulteration misdemeanour. The fault does not lie with the laws but with the implementation area of the law. It is up to the State administration to implement the laws or to bring in the laws if these do not exist in any State. Most of our administrative woes are related to poor implementation system of existing laws. It means either there is inefficiency or there is corruption. Both are unacceptable. Adulteration is injurious to health and hence is violation of human rights. All human beings have a right to pure food, water, air and surroundings. States cannot escape their responsibility to the people.
