Srinagar, May 1: The Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) who were earlier up in arms, seeking to be accommodated in different Medical Colleges across J&K, are likely to be adjusted for the internship in various Medical Colleges with the University of Kashmir today holding the counselling session and the authorities working on to find a way out.
After rectifying the issues highlighted by the FMGs regarding the merit list, the KU has handed over the entire process to the Director of Colleges, side-lining the Dean of Academic Affairs, who was previously in charge of the process.
Soon after the allegations of tampering with the marks by the university, the VC KU formed a committee to investigate, and the concerns were addressed in accordance with the guidelines.
“The counselling session was held today; we were asked to fill in the details with our preferences for the colleges, and we are hopeful that all of us who have qualified for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) will be accommodated,” said one of the FMGs.
The FMGs have raised the issue with the Secretary of the Health & Medical Education (H&ME) Department and have been assured that the matter will be resolved.
“While the counselling has been concluded, we do not yet know what the criteria for allotting medical colleges will be; it might take a day or two more, and after that, we will know what will happen, but we are hopeful that all those who have qualified will be accommodated,” the FMGs said.
The counselling was the last and final opportunity for eligible candidates whose general merit list is available on the university website to finalize their admission and preferences for the rotatory internship in affiliated colleges of the university. As per the KU, no claim for admission or preference will be entertained by any candidate under any circumstances whatsoever.
It is important to note that there are just 230 seats available for interns in Kashmir, while there are 400 qualified doctors who have passed the FMGE and have been granted a license to practice medicine anywhere in India.
Yashpal Sharma, Director (Coordination), New Govt. Medical Colleges told Excelsior that most of the FMGs have been accommodated according to available seats, and the others will be accommodated soon. “There are a number of financial implications associated with it; we are working on it, and it will be sorted,” he said.
