KATRA, Dec 27: First cochlear implant surgery was done successfully on a deaf and dumb child at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi (SMVD) Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Kakrayal.
Congenitally deaf and dumb, the child of a Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board employee would not have been able to hear a word in his life, nor speak if not for the philanthropic gesture from the Shrine Board.
Financially weak, the child’s father could not afford the surgery and had been waiting for a miracle to happen from the past four years. Hearing the story of the parents’ struggle, Shrine Board pitched in and decided to bear the cost of the treatment.
This also marked another first for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital as it was its first cochlear implant surgery, done by the surgical team consisting of Padmashree Dr JM Hans (Delhi), Dr Rohit Prasad (Delhi) and Dr Rohan Gupta, ENT consultant at SMVD Narayana Superspeciality Hospital.
“The surgery was carried out successfully, free from any complications and the child was discharged on the third post-op day”, said Dr Rohan Gupta.
Dr Rohan Gupta said that SMVD Narayana Superspeciality Hospital will be carrying out special OPDs for screening of patients suffering from similar impairments so that an early action can be taken for their treatment.
“The Shrine Board and SMVD Narayana Superspeciality Hospital have always been helping the needy and are committed to provide quality healthcare services to the society”, said, Dr Brig Manmohan Harjai, CAO of SMVD Narayana Superspeciality Hospital.
