Fast track infra development to make SMVDU centre of excellence : Vohra

KATRA, May 27 : N. N. Vohra, Governor, today emphasized the need for speeding up the construction of hostels, residential accommodation for faculty and staff and all other required infrastructure development of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) to meet the emerging requirements of the varsity and develop it as a centre of excellence in teaching and research.
The Governor was chairing the 19th Meeting of the Executive Council of the SMVD University at Kakryal near here today.
The Governor, who is Chancellor of the University, asked Prof. Sudhir K. Jain, Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, to urgently review the Master Plan, keeping in view the requirements for the next 20-30 years. The Vice Chancellor’s recommendations will be discussed and finalized by the Executive Council at its next meeting to be held in September, 2013.
Referring to the introduction of new courses and programmes in the University, the Governor stressed that these must be in sync with the emerging job market requirements along with focusing on ethical and moral values for equipping the students with required knowledge and skills as well as ensuring their balanced personality development. He added that this was extremely important to enable them to compete successfully with their counterparts elsewhere.
Earlier, Prof. Sudhir K. Jain, Vice Chancellor of the University, in his power point presentation, gave details of the academic and extra-curricular achievements of the University. He also dwelt on the efforts being made to improve the existing infrastructure and the initiatives taken in the fields of teaching and research and the future Action Plan.
The meeting among others was attended by Prof. M. P. S. Ishar, Vice Chancellor, Jammu University; Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir; R. S. Pawar, Chairman, NIIT Ltd, Gurgaon; R. P. Agrawal, former Secretary, Union Ministry of Human Resource Development; Prof. Vinayshil Gautam, H. L. Maini, Technical Advisor, SMVDU; Navin K. Choudhary, Principal Secretary to the Governor and CEO of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board; Dr. M. K. Bhandari, Additional CEO of the Shrine Board, other Members of the Executive Council and Roop Avtar Kaur, Registrar of the University, participated in the meeting. The Members of the Executive Council put forth several suggestions for the growth of the University.
Meanwhile, Mr. Vohra laid the foundation stone for the Aashray Bhawan (Dharamshala) for attendants of patients at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence.
The 4-storey Dharamshala building, estimated to cost Rs. 4.91 crore, will have 240 bed dormitory accommodation. Spreading over a built up area of 30,000 square feet, this complex will be completed within a period of two years.
The Governor, who is Chairman of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, reviewed with H. L. Maini, Member of the Shrine Board, and CEO the facilities to be provided to the attendants of the patients who would stay for given periods in this Dharamshala. He directed engagement of additional manpower to complete this facility well ahead of the envisaged construction schedule.
H. L. Maini, Member and Technical Consultant of the Board, Navin K. Choudhary, Principal Secretary to the Governor and Chief Executive Officer of the Shrine Board, Dr. Mandeep K. Bhandari, Additional CEO, and other concerned officers of the Board were among those present on the occasion.
