Farooq seeks probe into Amarnath tragedy

SRINAGAR, July 9: National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah today demanded a probe into the Amarnath cloudburst tragedy.

“The incident is unfortunate. An investigation into the matter is necessary, the Government needs to explain what happened. We also hope good compensation would be provided to families of deceased persons,” he said.
“We hope the Government will explain what happened and how. Basis on which tents were put up at such a risky place should be investigated. It was the first time tents were placed there. This can be a human error, he added.
Abdullah said: “I feel distressed after receiving the tragic news about the loss of pilgrims’ lives in the cloudburst near Shri Amarnath Ji cave shrine. I express my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray to the Almighty to bestow patience and courage to the bereaved families who lost their near ones in this natural calamity. It is hoped that the Yatra will resume soon as and when the weather improves.”
