KATHUA, July 22: The farmers of Marheen block of Kathua district blocked the National Highway at Chadwal Morh in support of their demand of regular power supply for planting the paddy in their fields.
A large numbers of the farmers led by Karan Kumar, Kuldeep Singh, Rakesh Chaudhary marched towards National Highway and sat on protest dharna there. They blocked the traffic movement on the busy NH. They were raising slogans in favour of their demands. They were demanding the regular power supply with required voltage to run the water pumps for irrigating their land. They said that the paddy plantation season is on peak and there is total shortage of irrigation water. The farmers are using the deep pump to supply the irrigation water to their fields but due to the low voltage and irregular power supply the motor pump don’t function causing serious problems to farmers.
Following the road blockage, the DySP Border reached on the spot and pacified the protestors. He appealed them to lift the dharna as their demands will be projected before the higher authorities. The farmers on his assurance lifted the dharna and a deputation later called on DC Kathua and submitted a charter of demands to Deputy Commissioner Kathua, Dr Raghav Langer.
