Family of disappeared youth alleges harassment

SRINAGAR, Mar 29: Parents of disappeared youth have alleged harassment at the hands of security forces. Parents of Showkat Ahmad Paul of Lawaypora in the outskirts of Srinagar, who is missing in alleged security force custody for past one decade, have alleged harassment at the hands of security forces.
Parents of Paul say that after reports about one Showkat Ahmad appeared in some newspapers about him being an active militant, security agencies started harassing them. They say that Showkat has been picked by 2 RR of Army in 2003 and is missing since then.
A senior Police official said here that an FIR is registered against missing of Showkat Ahmad Paul in Police Station Kothibagh and it is established case of missing.
Father of Shoukat, Abdul Rehman said that he immediately approached the nearby Khotibagh police station to lodge an FIR in 2003 when his son went missing in 2003. “Police refused to register an FIR. I then approached the court, which directed police to register an FIR. Finally police register an FIR under No 364 RPC and started investigation,” he said.
Rehman further said police constituted a special investigation team (SIT) and recorded the statements of various persons. “One of the CIK constables was also questioned, who accepted in front of the SIT members that they along with an RR officer had arrested Shoukat Ahmad from Pratap Park and took him to Sharif Abad, SOG camp Humhama and CIK. It was confirmed to SIT that Shoukat is in security forces custody,” he said.
The family members said that they are apprehensive about Shoukat’s life in security forces custody. They said that for the last couple of days, security agencies are harassing them and asking them about his whereabouts.
They have demanded end to harassment and have expressed apprehensions about the safety of their son who is allegedly missing in security force custody.
