Though belated yet the State Education Department has made the right move of streamlining the disbursement of scholarship money to the students through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). It means that the amount of scholarship will go direct to their bank accounts and thus chances of corruption will be eliminated. For this purpose the students will need to open bank account. The Government has decoded to make Aadhaar card as the document on the basis of which students can open account in the banks. Special care will be taken to ensure that all students who are recipients of scholarship will get their Aadhaar Cards soon so that they can open their accounts by August 15. The Government has decided to give 100 per cent Aadhaar card coverage to all students whether in Government schools or in private institutions.
Presently about 10,000 students are availing the scholarship which is likely to be increased to nearly 40,000. Similarly, the targets for merit-cum-means scholarships will also be utilized to the full, after careful consideration of the eligibility criteria. This is very good and encouraging news for the student community who had to go through many hassles to get their scholarships. Now with new instructions in this context, our State will have the same system of disbursement of student scholarships as in the rest of the country.
