JAMMU, Oct 28: Excise sleuths at Toll Post Lakhanpur have arrested a truck driver and seized 120 kgs of poppy straw (Bhukki) packed in 12 boxed and concealed under fruit boxes to be carried from Kashmir Valley to Punjab.
According to Excise Department handout a vehicle bearing Registration Number PB06E-8385 approached for Toll Tax clearance at export side of Toll Post Lakhanpur . The vehicle was loaded with fresh fruit of M/s Dar Transport Co destined to M/s PCF Melhont Punjab as per challan.
The vehicle was assessed by Inspector, Sajjad Majid and cleared by Sub inspector, Harmeet Singh which was finally put to physical check. During the physical check the vehicle was found loaded with apple along with poppy straw (Bhukki) in 12 boxes which were concealed in the apple boxes.
The consignment was weighed and found about 120 kgs. The driver of the vehicle was detained and later on handed over to the Police Station Lakhanpur for further investigation.
The operation was carried out by Excise inspectors, Bilal Ahmed and Ishtiaq Ahmed, Excise Head Guard, Mohammed Reyaz and Excise Guard, Manzoor Lone under the supervision of Excise and Taxation officers, Aamir Aiyaz , Sajjad Sofi and Abdul Rehman. The entire operation was closely monitored by Deputy Excise Commissioner, Toll Post Lakhanpur, Pardeep Singh Manhas.
The Excise Commissioner, M Raju while commending the role and efforts of the team of Toll Post Lakhanpur in detecting the contraband has urged them to work with more zeal and dedication to foil the attempts of smugglers in future.
