End to cross-border terror to diffuse tension; world should nudge Pak: India

NEW DELHI: Holding Pakistan solely responsible for escalating tension in South Asian region, India today said the situation could be diffused only with stoppage of cross-border terrorism and urged the world community to bring pressure on Islamabad to mend its ways.

”The root cause of tension is cross-border terrorism, which all the countries should oppose. Pakistan can be nudged,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said here at the weekly media briefing when asked whether major powers and the EU could play any role in reducing tension in the region.

He said the counter terrorism operation on September 29 was to neutralise an imminent threat of terrorists ready to be launched from across the LoC. ”The Indian Army was given a task which it carried out with surgical precision. The desired result has been obtained. The intended message has been conveyed,” Mr Swarup said.

On a question as to whether the MEA could share some evidence as Pakistan was denying that surgical strikes had taken place, Mr Swarup said it was for the Government to disclose or not anything depending on the requirement of national security.

”As we all know, it is usual to see Pakistan’s reaction of denial of terrorism sponsored from its soil against its neighbours. Elimination of Osama bin Laden and Mullah Mansoor was met with similar denials. But we all know the truth,” he said. (AGENCIES)
