JAMMU, July 9: On the directions of the District Magistrate Jammu, Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) today removed encroachment from the nullah in Trikuta Nagar, which had caused flooding in the area on the intervening night of July 8 and 9.
Reports said that on getting information in the early hours of today regarding flash floods in Trikuta Nagar area due to overnight heavy rains, the District Magistrate Simrandeep Singh along with a team of officers visited the area and observed that rain water had entered into the houses of the people and caused damages to their properties.
The District Magistrate was told by the locals that the only reason for such sudden flooding was the encroachment in the adjoining nullah by few people which had reduced the drainage passage. Even the DM observed that due to construction inside the nullah many underground sluices/pipes had got blocked resulting into negligible drainage area for water, which indeed was the primary reason for sudden flooding.
During on the spot enquiry it came to the fore that construction in nullah was an illegal encroachment and accordingly the District Magistrate invoked Section 144 CrPC and directed the Jammu Municipal Corporation to immediately deploy men and machinery and dismantle the encroachment in the nullah in Khasra No.10 of village Channi Rama.
Acting on the directions of DM, the JMC authorities removed the encroachment and process of clearing under passes of all the mulba was initiated so as to ensure free flow of water.
The Deputy Commissioner along with JMC Commissioner Saujanya Sharma also visited several other affected areas like Nanak Nagar, Bahu Fort, Channi Himmat, Greater Kailash, Model Town, Digiana and Gangyal.
While interacting with the people in these areas, the JMC Commissioner once against appealed them not to encroach the nullahs and throw building material as the same is the main cause of choking of nallahs.
