KATRA, May 25: A 45-year-old pilgrim from Delhi who suffered a severe heart attack during his visit to the holy shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi was successfully treated at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Katra.
According to hospital authorities, the pilgrim developed severe chest pain late at night during his visit to the shrine and was rushed to the hospital emergency department. Doctors diagnosed him with an acute inferior wall myocardial infarction (MI), a serious form of heart attack requiring immediate medical intervention.
As the patient was alone in Katra and away from his family, doctors remained in contact with his family members in Delhi and informed them about the urgency of treatment. After obtaining consent, the cardiology team carried out emergency treatment in the early hours of the morning.
Senior cardiologist Dr Mukesh Sharma performed an emergency angioplasty, also known as Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), to restore blood flow to the heart. Hospital officials said the procedure was completed successfully and the patient responded well to treatment.
The case was further complicated because the patient had a known allergy to aspirin, an important medicine used in cardiac treatment. Doctors conducted a supervised aspirin desensitization protocol to enable the patient to receive aspirin therapy safely. The treatment was completed without complications.
After receiving comprehensive cardiac care and monitoring, the patient recovered steadily and was later discharged in stable condition.
Executive Director of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), Dr Yashpal Sharma, said the successful treatment reflected the coordinated efforts of the emergency, cath lab, nursing and critical care teams.
