Sir,
For India, the biggest democracy in the world, elections have become exciting events since the country’s Independence. Among the posters symbol banners, rallies, road shows, discussions on audio visual and print media about accomplishments and failures; public yearnings for a change in the Govt after a long inning of the UPA, marked with sky rocketing prices and exposures of big scams; counter allegations, some educating facts of aspirations and grievances of people about their needs and their sufferings are brought about. Leaving aside some cases of the use of the money etc, for luring voters, muscle power and violence, which are being checked and controlled by the authorities, a silver lining of the democratic process is discernable. For instance it was pleasant to see on TV long queues of men and women waiting for their turn to cast their vote for the candidate of their choice. Some voters in Badgam in Kashmir looked happy and excited. Some of them were called upon by media persons to tell their impression about the voting. A lady and her white bearded husband said that they were delighted to exercise the right to casting their vote for representing them in the Parliament and fulfilling their aspirations. Another senior citizen said that he had experience of autocratic rule till the dawn of democracy. He said the he would vote for change. A young girl with her face partly veiled, interviewed while standing in ladies queue mentioned the purpose of voting.
Two words used by her impressed me much. She wanted to see the country prosper and that alongside there should be morality building. These two aspirations, though already prevailing in our country needs special attention by the Govt., which will come into being with our franchies. If the country is prosperous, peaceful having honest Govt, based on justice and equality, we will all share its pleasures. It was amazing to boserve from this daughter, how our outlook, which used to be limited, due to geographical resons, has widened with education and improved transport and communication, so that we are feeling on with rest of our countrymen.
Yours truly,
