JAMMU, May 7: Police across several districts of Jammu region arrested eight drug peddlers today, while recovering heroin, opium and cannabis-like substances from their possession.
One individual was also detained under the PIT NDPS Act and lodged in Central Jail, Kot Bhalwal, Jammu, for his repeated involvement in drug trafficking related activities.
Officials said in Jammu district, police apprehended a drug peddler during routine patrolling near the Ring Road flyover in Gajansoo area.
The accused, identified as Rakesh Singh alias Kasturi of Purkhoo Camp, was found in possession of approximately 4.04 grams of heroin-like substance.
He was accordingly booked in a case under sections 8/21/22 of the NDPS Act registered at Police Station Kanachak.
In Samba district, Police arrested two drug peddlers during naka checking at NHW Tapyal under the jurisdiction of Police Station Ghagwal.
The accused, identified as Taranjeet Singh of Abtal, Ramgarh and Rakesh Kumar of Sohal, Akhnoor, were travelling in a truck bearing registration number JK02DE-6019.
During checking, police recovered approximately 32 grams of opium-like substance from their possession.
Accordingly, the truck and contraband were seized and a case under sections 8/18 of the NDPS Act was registered.
In another operation in Samba, Police Station Bari Brahmana arrested one Vishal Singh alias Vishu of Sarore Naher and recovered approximately 6.95 grams of heroin-like substance from his possession during patrolling in the area.
A case under sections 8/21/22 NDPS Act was registered against the accused at Police Station Bari Brahamana.
Meanwhile, Police in Udhampur district apprehended two drug peddlers during checking on Majalta Road.
Officials said police intercepted a Verna car bearing registration number JK02BE-7880 and recovered 3.47 grams of heroin from driver Vishal Jamwal of Jindrah, Dansal, Jammu, and 3.48 grams from co-passenger, identified as Vansh Jamwal of Reasi.
In total, they said 6.95 grams of heroin was recovered and seized.
A case under sections 8/21/22 NDPS Act was accordingly registered at Police Station Majalta, they said.
In Reasi district, police detained a notorious drug peddler, Pushbinder Singh of Matlote, under the PIT NDPS Act and lodged him in Central Jail Kot Bhalwal, Jammu.
Police said the accused was repeatedly involved in drug trafficking cases and preventive detention became necessary due to his continued involvement in narcotics trade.
Meanwhile, police in Rajouri district also arrested two drug peddlers, including a woman, during naka checking at Badhoon Khandli area.
The accused, identified as Mohammad Tayub of Badhoon and Soniya Bai Sahu alias Seema of Chhattisgarh presently residing in Rajouri, were found in possession of 905 grams of ganja-like substance and cash amounting to Rs 40,000.
A case under relevant sections of the NDPS Act was registered against the accused at Police Station Rajouri.
Officials said investigation in all the cases is underway.
