Officials said search operations for the terrorists continued for fourth consecutive day today by joint teams of police, paramilitary forces and Army besides the Village Defence Guards (VDGs). However, there was no trace of terrorists and it is believed that they may have managed to escape from Basantgarh.
The terrorists were reportedly on the way towards Kashmir via mountains. The same route was used by the terrorists for reaching Kashmir more than two decades back.
Investigators are also working on to find out the routes taken by the terrorists for reaching Basantgarh after infiltration from Kathua. It is also being probed whether the two groups infiltrated separately.
Earlier, there were reports that the terrorists had been using underground tunnels to infiltrate into the Indian territory.
A VDG was martyred in an encounter with the terrorists at Basantgarh on Sunday morning. Since then, joint search operations have been launched in the area.
