JAMMU, July 2: JK Electronic Ear, Prime Speech and Hearing Clinic conducted an educational event on hearing loss and cochlear implants. The event was attended by more than 100 people.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hearing loss is the most widespread sensory deficit globally in humans today. The consequences for a child born with hearing loss are manifold. It is proven that a child with hearing loss cannot develop speech and language abilities. This hampers the child’s learning at school, college and limits future professional opportunities.

A cochlear implant is the only solution that can benefit children with severe or profound hearing loss. Unlike hearing aids, which simply amplify sound, a cochlear implant system bypasses the parts of your ear that no longer work properly and delivers sound in the form of electrical signals to the hearing nerve.
Cochlear implants are not new to India anymore. They have helped countless children overcome their hearing loss and become achievers in different walks of life. The cochlear implant program at JK Electronic Ear and Prime Speech and Hearing Clinic was started in 2000.
Now JK Electronic Ears, Prime Speech and Hearing Clinic is going to start surgical programme at ASCOMS & Hospital. The event saw experts from different medical disciplines such as Dr Shalabh Sharma, cochlear implant surgeon, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Dr Pawan Malhotra Principal ASCOMS, Dr Ravinder Gupta HoD pediatrics, Dr Rajesh Kumar HoD ENT, Abhay Kumar rehabilitaionist JK Electronic Ears, and Punnet Gupta Managing Director JK Electronic Ears, talk about cochlear implants, bilateral cochlear implantation, and importance of early intervention and speech habilitation. The families also got an opportunity to interact with these experts and resolve their questions.
Dr Navneet Gupta (Audiologist & Speech Pathologist) and main organiser of this respective programme from JK Electronic Ears said, “There is definitely an urgent need for universal new-born screening in India. Universal new-born hearing screening can identify hearing loss in babies at birth. This makes early intervention possible thereby reducing the trauma of hearing loss.”
