Dysfunctional CRMs

Medical Health Department and the Government seem to be unmindful of the consequences of de-prioritizing of urgent medical facilities awaiting attention in the Government Medical College and Hospital in Jammu. One of the two Cobalt Radioactive Machines (CRM) in Government Medical College, Jammu and Hospital remains dysfunctional since long. These machines are needed to treat cancer patients and a sum of 2 crore rupees stands sanctioned for making the ailing machine functional. Incidentally, it is painful to state that the number of cancer patients reported at the GMC has risen from 400- 500 in 1990s, to over 2000 as of now. The medical authorities and the Government had expressed do all they could to control the deadly disease but such claims are falsified by the way in which the necessary equipment is left dysfunctional nor for want of money but for want of the will on the part of responsible agencies in and outside the Medical Department. This is not acceptable. In view of rising number of cancer patients, additional and fully functional CRMs should be provided.
