JAMMU, Nov 7: Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, Harivansh Narayan Singh today inaugurated two -day international conference on Gandhian Philosophy, being hosted by Jammu University in collaboration with Central University Jammu and Sarvodaya International Trust.
The Conference on the topic “Revisiting the virtues of Gandhian Philosophy, the relevance and applicability in the 21st century,” formed the part of the eventful Golden Jubilee celebration of Jammu University and a homage paying gesture to the Father of Nation on his 150th birth anniversary.

Dr. Harivansh Narayan Singh, in his inaugural address, stressed upon adhering to the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. “Mahatma Gandhi believed that the purpose of Higher Education institutes should be to serve the people of the country and lead to their betterment,” he said adding that the Gandhian philosophy can improve future generations for many centuries such is the relevance of his teaching.
“Reaching the unreached with the life and message of Mahatma Gandhi especially in far flung areas, should be the core value and to undertake such other activities and to do all the foregoing mandate, educational institutions have a bigger role to play,” he stressed.
Pascal Alan Nazareth, Retd Ambassador of India, in his keynote address, said that Mahatma Gandhi neither had the benefit of personality development, communication, organisation, management or leadership courses nor good looks nor great oratory and his only guidance came from his “inner voice”.
Earlier, Prof Manoj Dhar, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu, in his welcome address, said that Gandhian principles and philosophy still have relevance in the 21st century.
Prof Ashok Aima, Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Jammu, spoke about the values of Gandhian philosophy and their applications in the present area.
Prof J S Rajput (UNESCO awarded educationist), Prof Savita Singh (Gandhian thinker), Prof Ramjee Singh ( eminent Gandhian thinker), Prof Aaron Benavot (University of Albany, NY USA) presented their views on Relevance of Gandhian philosophy on present scenario.
The Vote of thanks was presented by Prof Renu Nanda, organizing secretary of the conference. Proceedings of the event were conducted by Dr Komal. Nagar.
Among others, Prof Ravindra Kumar Sinha, Vice-Chancellor SMVDU; Prof Rattan Lal Hangloo, Vice-Chancellor, Allahabad University; Justice Pramod Kohli; Prof R K Ganjoo, Registrar JU; Prof Rajnikant, Director, DDE were also present on the occasion.
Academicians, scholars, social activists from different parts of the country are participating in the conference.
