JAMMU, Oct 8: The festival of Dussehra marking victory of good over evil was celebrated with religious fervor and gaiety across Jammu region today.
The main function was held at Parade Ground here where thousands of people drawn from different parts of Jammu city and outskirts watched the torching of effigies of demon King Ravan, his brother Kumbkaran and son Meghnath. The function was organized by Sanatan Dharam Sabha (SDS) Jammu in which the Union Minister of State in PMO, Dr Jitendra Singh was the chief guest.
As the effigies of demon King Ravan, Kumbkaran and Meghnath were torched, the slogans ‘Jai Shri Ram’ rent the air. Before torching of the effigies, a traditional pooja was performed by Saints and dignitaries present on the occasion.
First the effigy of Ravan’s Lanka was set ablaze which was followed by Meghnath, Kumbkaran and Ravan.
Earlier, Jhankis of Lord Rama and Lakshman, were taken out from Raghunath Bazar which was decorated on a special chariot and was joined by Vanar Sena on tractor trolleys organized by Dewana Mandir Natak Samaj from the Mandir premises. After passing from various city markets it culminated in Parade Ground where the Lord Rama torched the effigies.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Jitendra Singh while congratulating the people said that it is a special Dussehra for them this year and the coming Diwali will also be a special festival for the people of the State as it is first Dussehra and Diwali to be celebrated after abrogation of Article 370.
He said, while it took 14 years to Lord Rama in eliminating the demon King Ravan as well as his coterie and get rid of exile, it took 72 years of constant struggle and three generations sacrifices to people of this region in abrogating the controversial Article 370. He said this Dussehra and Deepawali have come with a special message for us and State will usher in the new era of peace, prosperity and development now.
He said a revolutionary decision was taken by Narendra Modi Government with abrogation of Article 370 so that the benefits of various Central Government schemes directly percolate to the people of the State.
Mayor, Jammu Municipality Chander Mohan Gupta, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Sanjeev Verma and IGP, Jammu Mukesh Singh, were the guests of honour. The function among others was attended by president of SDS , Bodh Raj Sharma, its general secretary, Prabhat Singh, Mahant Rameshwar Dass Ji of Purani Mandi Mandir, Mahant Dinesh Bharti, ex-MLA BJP, Rajesh Gupta, president Sanatan Dharam Natak Samaj, Anil Masoom, Abhisekh Gupta general secretary VHP and many other dignitaries. General secretary SDS, Prabhat Singh read the vote of thanks.
On the occasion of Dussehra, Shaster Poojan was performed at Rajput Sabha Jammu under the chairmanship of Narayan Singh. The speakers on the occasion threw light on the significance of the festival.
Reports reaching here said that the festival of Dussehra was also celebrated at Kathua, Samba Udhampur, Ramban, Bhaderwah and other towns with religious fervor and gaiety today.
At Kathua, thousands of people thronged the Ram Leela Ground in the town to witness the torching of effigies of Demon King Ravan and his kin. The function was organised by Ram Leela Committee Kathua led by Pardeep Andota. DC Kathua, O P Bhagat was the chief guest on the occasion.
In Samba district, the Dussehra function was held in Kali Mandi in which D C Samba , Rohit Khajruia was the chief guest while the SSP , Samba, Shakti Pathak was the guest of honour. The function was organised by Ram Natak Sabha, Samba. Another function was organized by local residents in Sports Stadium Samba where the effigies of demons King Ravan and his brother and kin were set on fire.
A grand function was held on the occasion of Dussehra at Udhampur and the effigies of Ravan and other demons were set ablaze at Subash Sports Stadium in the town.
On the occasion of Dussehra, a Jhanki was taken out by Durga Natak Mandli in the Reasi town which culminated at Parade Ground where the effigies of demon king and his brother and son were torched.
Dussehra was celebrated at Seri Bazar, Bhaderwah. The function was organised by Sanatan Dharam Sabha, Bhaderwah led by Virender Razdan, president.
