Sir,
This has reference to news item ‘Alarming trend; Opioids consumption more as compared to alcohol in J&K’ DE Mar 19, 2019.
The situation is indeed alarming in the State as it is getting out of control with each passing day. The matter has been taken note of by various sections of society, and many initiatives to check this trend have been taken, but something is miss somewhere, that is why it is disturbing. The stakeholders should launch a vigorous campaign to arrest this ugly trend. In case that does not happen, it will have serious ramifications on the social matrix of the society. Drug menace is not merely a burden on State exchequer, but a health hazard. This also leads addicts to indulge in anti-social and anti-national activities. The country can’t afford a population of drug-addicts at a time when the country is emerging a big power in the world.
Prevention programmes involving entities such as families, schools and the NGOs are important in this regard. Media especially the entertainment segment- also needs to understand its role in this context, glorification of drug use should be stopped completely.
