Drug Addiction Crisis

The alarming increase in drug addiction cases in Jammu and Kashmir is a crisis that demands urgent attention. The 129 percent surge in the number of drug addicts admitted to GMCs’ rehabilitation centres within just two years is a stark reminder of the growing menace. Such statistics indicate not just a worsening situation but also highlight the inefficacy of existing measures to control the problem. Despite the rising number of admissions, what is even more concerning is the apparent lack of full recovery among these patients. This suggests that a long-term solution remains elusive. The absence of clear data on the number of fully recovered patients raises questions about the effectiveness of rehabilitation programmes. If patients are not truly recovering, it indicates gaps in treatment methodologies and post-rehabilitation care.
However, amidst the grim reality, a slight dip in the number of drug addicts registered in OPD services since 2022 offers a glimmer of hope. From 9,775 cases in 2022, the number has reduced to 6,925 in 2024. While this trend might suggest some level of intervention success, it does not overshadow the increase in inpatient admissions, indicating that more individuals are reaching severe addiction stages. Jammu and Kashmir currently has 20 de-addiction centres, along with 11 addiction treatment facilities in Kashmir and nine in Jammu. The Government has also identified 19 private de-addiction centres in the Jammu division and four in Kashmir for registration. This expansion is a positive step, but mere numbers are not enough. The focus must shift towards improving the quality of rehabilitation and ensuring long-term recovery support. Collaboration with NGOs-three in Jammu and five in Kashmir-must be strengthened to enhance community-based interventions. The role of family counselling, vocational training, and societal reintegration cannot be underestimated. Additionally, stringent measures to curb the availability of drugs, along with educational campaigns in schools and colleges, are essential to prevent youth from falling into the trap of addiction. Without a sustained and comprehensive effort, the statistics will continue to rise, pushing an entire generation into the depths of addiction.
