Drive against use of polythene carried out

SRINAGAR, Jan 19: On the directions of Deputy Commissioner, Kupwara, several teams today conducted market checking and intensified anti-polythene drive across the district Kupwara.
The teams headed by concerned Tehsildars and BDO’s assigned the job by the District Magistrate, Kupwara, conducted market checking.
During the course of inspection, the teams seized 55.500 kilograms of polythene bags from the erring traders, who were found involved in keeping, selling and using the polythene bags in day to day business.
The erring shopkeepers and traders were penalized of Rs 17100 by the checking squads on the spot. The report was forwarded to the District Magistrate, Kupwara for further necessary action under rules.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Police while continuing its drive against the use of polythene seized and destroyed polythene bags in Srinagar, Anantnag and Handwara.
A police spokesman said the drive in Srinagar was carried out by Police Post Bemina and Chanapora in their jurisdictions. In Anantnag district, the drive was carried out at Sangam market, Marhama and Kulgam while in Handwara, Police Station Vilgam along with Tehsildar Taratpora carried out the drive at Taratpora Viligam market.
“Moreover, during the market checking at these places, it was found that most of the traders have shifted to use of non-polythene bags,” he said
“We also appealed the traders and consumers to avoid the use of polythene which is degrading our fragile environment & instead should shift to the use of eco-friendly carrying bags, so as to save the fragile ecosystem including precious water bodies of the Valley,” he added.
