JAMMU, July 5: Dr A K Kriplani, Director and Head of the Department of Minimal Access, Bariatric and G I Surgery, at the Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon, and visiting Surgeon at Triveni Nursing Home, has been conferred with Dr B C Roy Award- country’s highest award in the field of Medicine.
The award was conferred upon him by President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, in a glittering ceremony at the Ashok Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhawan on the occasion of Doctors’ Day.
Dr Kriplani has been given this prestigious award for best talent in encouraging the development of minimal access and bariatric surgery. The award is given by Medical Council of India to recognize the merit of an eminent doctor for his contribution in the field of Medicine.
Dr Kriplani was amongst the first few surgeons in the country and first in the Government sector to perform laparoscopic surgery. He graduated from Pt J N M Medical College Raipur in 1977 with 2 Gold Medals and passed M S in Surgery in 1981 from the same institution. He joined AIIMS, New Delhi and worked at various faculty positions till 1996.
From May 1996 to September 2014, he worked as Senior Consultant in Laparoscopic surgery at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi and started the division of Bariatric Surgery in 2006 as chief of the Centre of Weight Loss Surgery. In 2014, he joined Fortis Hospital, Gurgaon, as Director and Head of the Department of Minimal Access Surgery Department, which has been perhaps performing largest number of scar less single incision Laparoscopic cholecystectomies in India, under his leadership.
Dr Kriplani has already been conferred with 30 awards/honours/orations of national and international levels. He has a free teaching video channel of laparoscopic surgery on youtube with 34 videos. He is editor of a textbook “Comprehensive Laparoscopic Surgery” and has contributed 38 scientific publications/invited chapters in books.
It is pertinent to mention here that Dr A K Kriplani’s wife, Dr Alka Kriplani- who is HoD Gynaecology, AIIMS, was awarded Padam Shree, last year.
