On 16th of December a colorful function was held near Town Hall Udhampur at ‘Shradhanjali Sthal’ to pay homage to the martyrs of 1971 war. The function was held under the banner of All India Ex-services League and Ex-serviceman welfare Sangthan attended by families of the martyrs in addition to the MOS, Deputy Commissioner Udhampur and other respectable inhabitants of the city. This day is celebrated every year on this day. The unique feature of this year’s function was that none of the participating members mentioned the name of first martyr of the District, Late Subedar Krishan Singh Jamwal of village ‘Urlian’ of Udhampur Tehsil, who laid his life on 15/16th of July 1948 at Krishna Ghati Poonch, while fighting with enemies and was decorated with second highest gallantry award of war time ‘Veer Chakra’ posthumously by the Government of India. The participating personalities even failed to see the name of the martyr on the list of martyrs placed at the spot. Even none of the family members or the members of ‘Shaheed Krishan Singh Memorial Committee Urlian’ were invited or apprised about the function. What a wonderful homage to the martyrs. The organizers of the function have deeply hurt the feelings of the residents of village Urlian and at the same time feel insulted by ignoring the mention of the martyr of their village, who has brought laurels for the country as a ‘VEER CHAKRA’ holder along with so many others. The people of village Urlian registered their concern through the media, with the organizers for this sort of unfair treatment while paying homage to the martyrs of the Nation.
The announcement made by the Deputy Commissioner to release funds for erection of Statue of valiant soldier Major Narayan Singh,VC awardee and to name the Chowk as ‘Major Narayan Singh Chowk’ is a matter of great pleasure and appreciation for the DC to recognize the sacrifices of great soldiers of the soil. At the same time consideration of such measure is must for erection of the statue of Subedar Krishan Singh Jamwal,VC awardee and first such personality from District Udhampur and to name one of the conspicuous Chowks of Udhampur on his name as ‘Subedar Krishan Singh Chowk’ on the pattern of the commitment of the Deputy Commissioner Udhampur on the occasion. We strongly demand so. We even request DC Udhampur to identify such other martyrs residing in District for similar recognition; otherwise this will amount to discrimination with their sacrifices.
