JAMMU, July 14: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has approved enhancement of 13 BDS seats each for Government Dental College, Srinagar and Jammu respectively for the upcoming session of 2019-2020 under Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota, thus enhancing the intake capacity of each Dental College from the existing 50 to 63.
“The Central Government has granted permission for increase of seats in existing BDS course from 50 to 63 at Indira Gandhi Government Dental College Jammu for the academic session 2019-20 for implementation of 10 per cent reservation of seats for EWS candidates in compliance with the Constitution (103rd amendment) Act 2019,” read an order issued by the Government.
A similar order was also issued separately for Government Dental College and Hospital, Srinagar, wherein it was stated that Union Government has granted permission for increase of seats from 50 to 63 for implementation of EWS quota of 10 % from current academic session.
“The process of renewal of permission in the increased intake capacity will continue till such time the expansion of its facilities is completed and the course is recognized against the increased intake,” the order said.
“Any admissions made in violation of the above condition will be treated as irregular and action under the provisions of the Dentists Act, 1948 and Regulations made there under shall be taken,” it further added.
Official sources said that this is a major boost to the overall scenario in the discipline of Dentistry in the State where all healthcare institutions are now being planned to be supplemented with Dental care and facilities. However, they expressed doubt whether BDS aspirants belonging to Economically Weaker Section will be able to reap the benefit of 10% reservation or not as the State Government has so far failed to get the necessary law amended and notify the rules for the same.
