The preliminary work for conducting Panchayati elections seem to have been completed with delimitation of Panchayats in this sensitive State. The Government must ensure that every aspect related to holding elections is complete. Last minute preparations only add to confusion.
Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) are grass root democratic institutions for empowering people, particularly poor rural people. The villages in the State have not attained the level of development they should have by this time. Our villages lack basic amenities of life-electricity, potable water. healthcare and connectivity. Some of the villages seem to be living in medieval times. It will take lot of time for these people to catch up with modernity and have access to resources which may ensure their dignified life.
There are no employment opportunities available to them. The main source of their livelihood remains agricultural and horticulture practices. Though these activities sustain them, they are not sufficient enough to meet their growing needs.
PRIs will play a keyrole in their upliftment from abject poverty. The progress has halted in these areas as PRIs have not flourished due to undue political interference and militancy.
Hope the Government of the day may not falter on conducting these elections well in time.
