JAMMU, July 24: District Development Commissioner, Jammu A K Sahu along with Joint Directors from Health & Education Department, reviewed the implementation of Mid Day Meal (MDM) scheme in the district at meeting of district and block level officers of Education, Health, PHE & Rural Development Departments.
The meeting also reviewed the implementation of School Health Check Up programme, besides provision of drinking water/toilet facilities in Government schools of district Jammu.
While reviewing the Mid Meal Scheme, it was reported that the scheme is under implementation in 1977 Government schools having an enrolment of 58104 students of Primary & upper Primary classes.
It was said that nutritious meal having protein value of 20 gms and calorific value of 700 gm is being served to the students of the Upper Primary Classes and food containing 12 gm protein and 450 gm calorific value is provided to primary classes .
The meeting was informed that over Rs.2.50 crore was spent on providing Mid Day meal during 2012-13 by utilizing food grains worth Rs 1.47 crores supplied by the Government.
As regards construction of kitchen sheds, it was informed that 1388 schools have this facility and remaining 183 schools are being covered during the current year.
The DDC held zone wise review of the implementation of the scheme and exhorted upon the Zonal Education Officers (ZEOs) to organize trainings for the cooks to educate them about the hygienic preparation and serving of meals to the students.
He stressed that the Head Teacher, Janch Committee, Mother Committee Members and Panchayats should be involved in the implementation of scheme by the respective schools. He also directed to store the food and other ingredients in air tight storage bins and use only AG Mark spices, BIS Mustard Oil or Refined Vegetable Oil for cooking. He strongly refrained from using Vanaspati ghee or Palmoline Oil for cooking meals. He also instructed that the cooked meal should be tasted by the Headmaster and incharge teacher before serving it to the students.
The DDC directed that the health check up programme schedule for the current year should be finalized for each and every school jointly by the respective ZEO and BMO.
About drinking water facility, it was reported that majority of the schools have been provided drinking water facility and the remaining 151 schools functioning from rented accommodations are being provided drinking water supply through temporary arrangements.
About toilet facilities, it was informed that 193 schools which are functioning from rented buildings have been provided temporary arrangements, while all other schools have been provided separate toilets for girls, besides disabled friendly toilets are also being constructed in schools having enrolment of physically challenged children.
