DC Leh reviews disaster management preparedness

LEH, Aug 19: The Deputy Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, LAHDC, Leh Sachin Kumar convened a meeting today with the officers of Army, police, Airforce, Himank, ITBP and district officers and reviewed the preparedness to deal with natural as well as man-made disaster in case of any eventuality.
Discussing various measures of preparedness including disaster management plan, DC Leh strongly urged on greater coordination among various Government agencies and Defence wings in the time of disaster so as to ensure that every rescue and relief measure goes smoothly.
Other disaster management issues like maintenance of communication system, readiness of men and machines, power backup, transportation system, awareness mechanism, relief measures, availability of equipments and other important steps to tackle any disastrous situations were thoroughly discussed in the meeting.
To keep the main hospital and other medical resource centres fully prepared for any eventuality, Sachin Kumar laid emphasis on devising a Plan-B and makeshift provisions. Other preventive steps like dissemination of awareness and capacity building at all levels, holding of mock drills, restoration of Pawan Hans helicopter service, early creation of a helipad at SNM hospital and use of latest communication technology such as mobile phones, whatsaap, SMS for sharing critical information are also important to manage and alleviate disasters, he emphasized.
Deputy Commissioner further urged upon the district officers to remain utmost alert, vigilant and responsive by keeping their cell phones constantly on working mode in any situation.
The Additional District Development Commissioner, Leh Moses Kunzang addressing the meeting said that district administration has devised a District Disaster Management Plan on the basis and experience of 2010 flash flood by chalking out effective strategies for both preventive measures as well as rescue and relief operations. He sought suggestions and inputs from the experts to improvise the plan and make it a practicable one.
The Adm. Comdt. Station Headquarter Army, Col Khanna briefed the meeting about the preparedness of Army in extending rescue and relief assistance to the civilian population in case of any untoward incident of natural or man-made disaster.
