JAMMU, Feb 20: In a Public Interest Litigation filed by Bar Association Doda through its President highlighting the issue of road accidents across the State particularly in erstwhile Doda district, Division Bench of State High Court comprising Chief Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed and Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur has directed the respondents to file affidavits indicating the steps taken to check road accidents and to provide quick medical assistance to the victims.
After hearing Advocate Syed Hashmi for the PIL, DB said, “we would also require the respondents to file an affidavit indicating the number of accidents which have taken place in Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban in last two years with their specific locations so that accident prone areas can be clearly identified”.
“Judicial notice can be taken of the fact that a number of accidents resulting deaths of persons are taking place on the National Highway as well as State roads in the districts of Rajouri, Doda and Kishtwar. The counsel for the petitioners has given many reasons as to why such accidents may be occurring”, the DB said, adding “the reasons, as per the petitioner, are inter alia over loading of vehicles, the vehicles not mechanically fit, the vehicles being driven by the persons not having valid driving license, the dangerous curves and narrow roads not having crash barriers on the side etc”.
