JAMMU, Jan 7: As the intense cold conditions continued to grip entire northern region, Jammu’s day temperature has gone about 8 degree below normal, showing sharp fall in temperature in last few days while the foggy weather conditions disrupted air and train traffic in the region.
Jammu’s day temperature continued to fall gradually. It was nearly 15 degree Celsius on January 4, 10.2 degree C on January 5, 11.8 degree C on January 6 while today it was recorded as low as 11.0 degree Celsius. The day temperature has gone around eight degree Celsius below normal today, which otherwise should be around 19 degree Celsius.
The night temperature in Jammu has also shown sharp decline. It has gone to 5.5 degree C, as recorded at Chatha observatory of SKUAST-Jammu. On January 4, Jammu recorded the minimum temperature of 8 degree Celsius while it was around 8.5 degree C on January 3. It was lowest (1.2 degree C) of the season on December 30. Jammu had also recorded a maximum 9.3 degree C on Dec 26, which was lowest maximum temperature of the season so far.
In view of foggy weather conditions, the Sun was not visible through out the day in plain and some partially hilly areas of Jammu region. As the earth is not receiving heat waves, the temperature continued to fall. The weather has also badly hit the train services for several hours, whereas, many flights are arriving and departing late from Jammu Airport for the last several days. One Spice Jet flight was diverted in view of poor visibility at Jammu airfield.
A Met official disclosed that Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of -2.4 degree C and maximum 13.0 degree C. There has been sharp fall in the night temperature since yesterday.
Kargil recorded the lowest temperature of -16.0 degree C while Leh town of Ladakh region -10.9 degree Celsius.
Surprisingly, Kupwara town of Kashmir recorded a maximum temperature of 17 degree C while in Katra town of Jammu it was less, 9.6 degree C. However, the night temperature at Katra was 4.8 degree C while at Kupwara -3.1 degree C.
Bhaderwah recorded a maximum temperature of 15.6 degree C and minimum 0.5 degree C, Banihal maximum 15.0 degree C and minimum 1.2 degree C, Batote maximum 17.0 degree C and minimum 4.1 degree C, Kathua minimum 7.2 degree C and Udhampur minimum temperature of 1.7 degree Celsius.
Famous Tourist resort Gumarg in Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of -4.0 degree C while Pahalgam -5.6 degree Celsius today.
The Met official has predicted intense cold and dry weather conditions in next couple of days in the State and foggy and partially cloudy weather in plains of Jammu region. He said the weather in Kashmir would remain cold during next couple of days as the day temperature also dips drastically, freezing most of the water bodies including Dal lake.
DySP Jammu Airport, Mr Raina when contacted told the Excelsior that most of the flights were late today due to dense fog during morning hours. The visibility was very poor and most of the flights could operate from the Jammu airport only after 11.45 am. Mr Raina said most of the flights were rescheduled and their departure timings were also changed. He said route of one Spice Jet flight was changed due to poor visibility in Jammu.
Meanwhile, a Northern Railways spokesman said that many trains were late by two to seven hours as dense fog continue to envelop plain areas of northern region. He said rush of passengers has been witnessed at Jammu railway station due to late departure and arrival of trains. Pooja Express was late by nearly 8 hours. Pooja and Rajdhani trains also left late from Jammu Station this evening. Varanasi Express was late by two hours, Utter Sampark Kranti around one and half hours late, Malwa Express around five hours, Jhelum Express about 4 hours, Jabalpur-Jammu around six hours, Archna Exp by five and half hours, Bathinda -Jammu by two hours, Hemkund by one and half hours, Jamnagar Exp by one and half hours, Tata Mooori by five hours, Lohit Exp by three and half hours, Shalimar by two hours, Rajdhani by two hours, Sarai Rohilla-Jammu by one and half hours, while Anand Vihar by four and half hours late today.
Meanwhile, foggy weather conditions have also affected normal vehicular traffic on the highways. Many inter-state buses are arriving late these days. It is said that due to poor visibility on the highways, the number of road accidents have also increased in the region. The chilly weather conditions have restricted the farming activity and free movement of the people especially during early morning.
