Dawa inaugurates ‘Sun & Earth Festival’ of Ladakh

LEH, July 21: An Internati-onal standard festival named “Sun & Earth Festival of Ladakh” to learn essential techniques and concept for constructing natural building using earth material and solar energy, commenced here today.
Hill Council Chairman, Dr Sonam Dawa formally inaugurated the 12-day festival wherein expert and students from 15 countries are participating. The festival is being organized by the upcoming Alternative University for Mountain Development-Himal-ayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh at Photang Hall Phyang.
Participants from countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, France, Romania, Japan, Iran, Afghanistan, Algeria, and Chile will work and learn together during the festival. During the festival expert from different countries will showcase their concept of building different structure using earth, sun, rock and water while student will learn new techniques to construct building and walls.
Dr Dawa said that Ladakh is famous for culture and traditions and to see the richness of culture and tradition lots of tourists coming to this place so such festival will helps to revive and enhance the knowledge of building Ancient like building. Apprecia-ting Wangchuk for conserving solar energy in building, CEC assured that Government will make best efforts to tap solar energy in various Governments institutions in future.
Welcoming the participants from different parts of the world Sonam Wangchuk said that the concept of this festival is to blend the traditional concept with new technology to show the world a new concept to build “Earth Building” using Sun and Earth to live peacefully on the earth for centuries. He informed that concerete building lasts for 60 to 100 years whereas earth building lasts for centuries and fort and palaces in Ladakh are testimonial to this fact.
On the occasion, Khanpo Konchok Rigzin readout the Skyabgon Dikung Chetsang Rinpoche’s congratulation message to participants and Wangchuk for holding such festival in Ladakh.
EC Works Dorjay Mutup, SE PWD Tashi Chobbel and Nambardar Tashi Dorjay were also present during the inaugural function.
