Srinagar, Jan 20: Aiming to ensure a speedy response during a fire emergency situation, a firefighting boat created by local stakeholders was displayed on Dal lake today.
The boat, specifically designed to traverse the lake’s waters, became a reality through the efforts of houseboat owners, social activists, and other stakeholders under the banner of the Houseboat Welfare Trust. Click here to watch video
“I felt the need for such a facility in case of emergencies; I receive calls in such situations because we have already created a floating ambulance to address medical emergencies,” said Tariq Ahmad Patloo, the brain behind the firefighting boat.
To secure the finances needed for the boat’s creation, all stakeholders provided necessary assistance, making it possible to finally have a firefighting boat on Dal Lake.
While the boat is not fully operational and requires additional equipment, those involved in the process believe it will be of great help in emergencies.
“It will take 20 more days to make it fully functional; we are awaiting equipment from Pune. Once we receive the boat will be put to use,” Patloo mentioned.
It is noteworthy that several cases of fires have been reported in Dal Lake and its surroundings, during which it has been seen that due to various factors, the response from the Fire Department has remained slow, even though they arrive at the scene promptly. This has prompted locals to find an alternative which is swift and effective.
“It will be of great help as we will be able to reach the interiors of Dal. There has always been a need for it in Dal Lake, but it hasn’t been provided all these years,” said Bashir Ahmad, a local resident.
Discussing the specifications, Patloo mentioned that the boat has the capability of throwing water from three sides, enabling responders to douse the flames from three different directions, making it effective.
“What is going to be advantageous is the availability of water around; more importantly, being stationed nearby, the boat will be able to reach wherever needed,” Patloo said.
