In this global era of technological transformation, the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into schools and higher education has transformed cybersecurity ecosystem from a technical IT issue into a critical strategic governance challenge. The increasing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into digital systems has significantly transformed the way individuals and institutions interact with technology. AI-enabled applications are now widely used in education, communication, governance, data processing, and content generation. While these technologies offer enhanced efficiency, accessibility, and innovation, they also introduce new cyber safety concerns thus allowing cybercriminals to automate, personalize, and accelerate attacks, that require informed understanding and responsible engagement. The education sector is now one of the most targeted, with ransomware and AI-driven social engineering posing significant risks to sensitive student data and institutional continuity. Educators, administrators, and learners increasingly rely on AI-enabled digital platforms for teaching – learning processes, assessment, communication, and academic support. However, limited awareness of how AI systems operate, how data is processed, and how cyber risks emerge can expose users to threats such as identity misuse, misinformation, and compromise of personal and institutional data. AI systems function through large-scale data collection, automated decision-making, and algorithmic processing. As a result, they are susceptible to risks such as unauthorized data access, privacy breaches, algorithmic bias, automated cyberattacks, deepfake manipulation, and AI-assisted fraud. The growing use of generative AI tools and intelligent platforms has expanded the cyber threat landscape, making cyber safety a critical concern for individuals as well as educational institutions. Understanding AI-related cyber risks has therefore become an essential aspect of contemporary digital literacy. Cyber safety in the context of AI extends beyond technical protection measures. It involves ethical use of AI tools, awareness of AI-driven cyber threats, protection of data and digital identities, and adherence to legal and regulatory frameworks. Educational institutions play a crucial role in guiding teachers and learners towards responsible engagement with AI technologies and in fostering a culture of critical awareness, accountability, and safe digital practices. The online training programme on “Cyber Safety in the Era of AI” aims to strengthen the knowledge and practical understanding of educators and institutional stakeholders regarding the safe and responsible use of AI technologies. Participants will also be equipped to guide learners in engaging thoughtfully and ethically with AI-driven digital tools. This initiative aligns with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which places strong emphasis on digital literacy, critical thinking, ethical use of technology, and cyber safety as integral components of education. The rapid progression of AI technologies including ChatGPT has provided students with unprecedented tools capable of generating high-quality academic content with minimal effort or learning.
Emerging AI-Driven Cybersecurity Challenges in Prevailing Era
* Hyper-Personalized Phishing & Social Engineering: Attackers are using generative AI to create highly convincing phishing emails that mimic the tone and style of school administrators, significantly increasing success rates.
* Deepfake Impersonation: AI-powered tools can now generate realistic voice or video clones, enabling scams where a “superintendent” might direct a staff member to authorize an immediate financial payment or transfer funds to a malicious account.
* Data Poisoning & Model Manipulation: Educational AI tools, such as Chatbots or admissions AI, can be manipulated by feeding them malicious training data, leading to biased decisions, leaked personal data, or unfair grading.
* Data Privacy & “Shadow AI”: The unauthorized use of free, unvetted AI tools (“Shadow AI”) by students and faculty can lead to sensitive research or student data being used to train public AI models.
Specific Risks for Schools & Higher Education
* High-Value Target Data: Schools Often lack dedicated IT security staff and financial resources, needed to defend against sophisticated AI-powered threats compared to private businesses, leaving them reliant on outdated systems. Increased use of online tools brings risks of unauthorized access to student records and personal data of minors. Universities handle critical research, making them targets for nation-state actors interested in intellectual property theft. They also face risks from “ghost students” (fake identities used for financial aid fraud).
* IoT & Legacy System Vulnerabilities: The rapid expansion of smart campus devices (IoT) and reliance on outdated IT systems, which may prone to vulnerabilities create “open doors” for ransomware, with malware attacks on smart devices in education increasing by 146% recently.
Disruption of Operations: Ransomware attacks can cause significant downtime, disrupting learning and, in extreme cases, leading to the permanent closure of institutions.
Remedial Measures and Strategies for Strengthening Cybersecurity
To combat these threats, educational institutions must move from a reactive security posture to a proactive, AI-driven, and “zero-trust” model.
* Deploy AI-Driven Defense Tools: Use AI to monitor network traffic for anomalies in real time, block malicious phishing attempts, and automatically isolate infected devices.
Implement Zero-Trust Security: Assume that no user or device is trusted by default. Implement multi-factor authentication (MFA) across all systems, particularly for accessing sensitive data.
Invest in Training and Awareness: Regularly train staff and students to recognize AI-generated phishing and social engineering attempts.
Strengthen Vendor Management: Vet the security practices of EdTech third-party providers, ensuring they comply with data protection regulations.
Establish Incident Response Plans: Create and update procedures to rapidly detect, report, and recover from cybersecurity breaches to minimize operational disruption.
Adopt Secure-by-Design Principles: As institutions implement new AI technologies, prioritize transparency and security in their selection and configuration.
The author likes to argues that without substantial reforms in assessment practices to ensure the validation of foundational learning and development of academic skills expected at the tertiary level, the value of academic degrees will be undermined. Students who rely on AI without engaging in genuine learning may achieve academic success yet remain ill-prepared for the demands of their respective industries. This situation risks eroding trust in the competencies of graduates and questions their suitability for employment, ultimately impacting the credibility of higher education qualifications.
