SAMBA, Sept 20: In Samba district, prices of sand, Bajri and other construction materials has skyrocketed as the royalty contractors are charging the arbitrary price from customers.
The local people said the administration has not fixed the royalty price in Samba yet and despite that customers are being charged high rate. They said that the sand trolley that was earlier available easily for Rs 800 to Rs 900 is now sold for Rs 2000 to Rs 2500. When customers question it they are told that tenders have been taken by some contractors from outside J&K who are charging eight to 10 times more royalty, due to which the price of sand gravel has increased.
Local residents Satpal Singh, Shanu Singh, Rahul Kumar, Pardeep Kumar, Sandeep Kumar and Shubham Kumar said that the poor are dying of price rise in this Corona era, while on the other side to construct a roof over head, the price of sand and gravel required for the same has also increased as to the royalty contractors’ charging an arbitrary price, which has caused a lot of resentment among the people. They said that the dawn to dusk in Samba, illegal mining starts from the other rivers and drains, including Basanter river, which no one is going to check.
People have appealed the Lt Governor and district administration Samba to curb these illegal activities on account of royalty and take strict action against the vandalism on mineral assets.
