The Government of Jammu and Kashmir announced special financial incentives for the COVID-19 Warriors of Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu two years ago. However, these incentives have not been released yet, causing disappointment among frontline health workers. The Health and Medical Education (H&ME) Department sanctioned the incentives in May 2021, which were meant to reward the services of health workers who directly dealt with COVID-19 patients during challenging times. While other health institutions received incentives, GMC Jammu was denied the same opportunity. The administration has not provided any reasons for denying the financial incentives to the COVID-19 warriors of GMC Jammu. It is important to acknowledge the immense dedication and sacrifices made by the frontline COVID-19 warriors of GMC Jammu. Despite facing numerous practical challenges, they have risked their lives and remained committed to their duties. Denying them the incentives they were promised, especially when similar benefits have been given to healthcare institutions elsewhere, reflects insensitivity. The delay in releasing these benefits can be attributed to frequent changes in administrative setups, including Principals and H&ME Administrative Secretaries.
Considering that the number of employees qualifying for the incentives is only a few hundred and the amount itself is not substantial, it would be advisable for the higher authorities to coordinate with the Finance Department and expedite the process. If budgetary allocation is a concern or special permission is required, the concerned authorities need to prioritise resolving these matters promptly. Coordinating consent and ensuring the timely release of the promised incentives would not only address the grievances of the frontline health workers but also demonstrate the Government’s recognition and appreciation for their tireless efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Government should address this issue promptly and ensure that the frontline health workers of GMC Jammu receive the financial incentives they rightfully deserve. Recognising their efforts and providing them with the promised benefits is crucial to acknowledging their contribution and maintaining their morale and motivation.
