Court awards compensation to rape victim

JAMMU, May 23: Principal Sessions Judge Kishtwar, Bala Jyoti has awarded Rs 20,000 compensation under Victim Compensation Scheme to a rape victim.
The prosecutrix was raped by accused Babu Ram and consequently she became pregnant and delivered a baby boy. She approached the Chairperson District Legal Services Authority for compensation as she has been put to starvation.
After hearing prosecutrix and Public Prosecutor, Principal Sessions Judge passed an order for rehabilitation of victim as it has become difficult for her to sustain without maintenance allowance or compensation .
“In my opinion prosecutrix is a rustic village girl belonging to economically depressed family who was allegedly kept by the accused person under false promise of marriage, became pregnant and gave birth to a life. But both mother and child are without maintenance allowance and their survival is difficult as such her case was recommended to Member Secretary Legal Aid for allotment of funds under the head of disbursement to the victim till disposal of charge sheet as it may take some time for conclusion of trial”, the court said in the order.
On the recommendation of the court, an amount of Rs 20,000 has been sanctioned for the prosecutrix under Clause 3 and Sub-Clause 4 of the J&K Victim Compensation Scheme, 2013.
