Cop injured in bovine smugglers’ attack

KATHUA, Aug 7: A cop was injured when suspected bovine smugglers hurled stones at a search party in Kathua district today, an official said.

Police fired two rounds in the air to restore order and arrested one of the attackers early morning at Check Gotta village in Lakhanpur area, police said.
It said the police party was rushed to the village on receiving information about the movement of bovine smugglers.
“As the police party was approaching a particular area, a group of people pelted stones at them. Two rounds were fired in retaliation to restore order,” an officer said, adding Selection Grade Constable, Kuldeep Kumar suffered minor injuries in the incident.
He said a case was registered against the stone pelters at Lakhanpur Police Station.
Search for the other attackers is on, he said.
Official said a police team of Police Station (PS) Lakhanpur along with SOG party headed by DySP Operation, Kathua Tilak Raj Bhardwaj and SHO PS Lakhanpur Inspector, Vijay Kotwal were conducting early morning search in Maggar Khad area in the jurisdiction of PS Lakhanpur in view of forthcoming Independence Day.
During search, at about 0630 hours, a mob of few persons led by Mohammad Sharif, son of Lal Hussain of Maggar Khad tehsil and district Kathua, Shadu son of Meedu also of Maggar Khad tehsil and district Kathua along with other persons with criminal intention attacked with lathies, sharp edged weapons (Tokas) as well as pelted stones on police party who were performing their duties.
The official said in the attack, a cop got injured. In order to disperse the mob, police party fired some warning shots in air in self defence and thereafter the police team succeeded in detaining one person namely Mohd. Sharif son of Lal Hussain of Maggar Khad, tehsil and district Kathua along with sharp edged weapon (Toka).
A case vide FIR No. 70/2022 U/S 307/353/332//147/149/IPC, 4/25/Arms Act has been registered at PS Lakhanpur and investigation taken up besides the search to nab other accused person is going on.
