SRINAGAR, May 31: Construction activities for the 240 MW Uri-I Stage-II Hydroelectric Project formally commenced today with the successful execution of the first blast at Adit-3 in Mohura of north Kashmir’s Uri.
The inaugural blast was carried out in the presence of the Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC, who officially launched the construction phase of the project.
The Uri-I Stage-II project, being developed by NHPC on the Jhelum River in Baramulla district, is an extension of the existing Uri-I Hydroelectric Project and is aimed at strengthening J&K’s power generation capacity.
Officials said the first blast marked the beginning of major underground works for the project, which is expected to play a significant role in augmenting electricity generation and enhancing energy security in the region.
The 240 MW project will comprise two generating units of 120 MW each and is expected to generate around 932 million units of clean energy annually through an underground powerhouse.
According to officials, the project is a part of broader efforts to harness J&K hydropower potential and reduce dependence on external sources of electricity.
They said the commencement of construction activities represents an important stage in the execution of the project, which is expected to contribute substantially to meeting the region’s future power requirements.
The Uri-I Stage-II Hydroelectric Project is also expected to strengthen the energy infrastructure of J&K and support sustainable power generation in the coming years.
