Cong remembers Rajiv Gandhi on 74th birth anniversary

JAMMU,  Aug 20: Floral tributes were paid to the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 74th birth anniversary by the  Congress Party  in various functions organised across the State today.
Pradesh Congress Committee held the main function at PCC headquarters, Shahidi Chowk,  Jammu today to celebrate the 74th birth anniversary of  Late Rajiv Gandhi. PCC chief GA Mir presided over the function which was attended by senior PCC functionaries, leaders of District  Congress Committee,  blocks and frontal organizations.
Paying floral tributes to Rajiv Gandhi, Mir described him as the architect of 21st Century, who prepared the youth  of the country for the future challenges in the modern world, especially  IT and Computer revolution, lowering of voting age from 21 years to 18 years and a vibrant Panchayati Raj system in the country.

Mir said that it was the vision of Late Rajiv Gandhi that he foresaw the future of the country in preparing and educating youth of the country for the 21st century. He saw great opportunity in the IT revolution and introduced computerization in late eighties. The opposition especially BJP leaders termed him as a “Computer Boy”.  Today, they talk of digital India, which became possible due to the efforts of Rajiv Gandhi.
PCC chief said that Rajiv Gandhi lowered the voting age to 18 years to ensure the participation of youth in the democratic  and political process and emergence of young leadership. The vibrant Panchayat Raj System with 33% reservation to women and due reservation to SC/STs has ensured the transfer of power to the people. He said that 73rd /74th amendment was introduced and incorporated into the Panchayats  and Urban bodies to establish elected three- tier system in the State by the efforts of Congress in the previous coalition of NC-Congress in 2014.
Paying rich tributes to Rajiv Gandhi, former ministers and PCC vice president Mula Ram remembered his contribution to the nation in various fields. He recalled his visits to the state as general secretary AICC and later as Prime Minister and recalled his affection for the people of the state.
Former minister Raman Bhalla paid glowing tributes to Late Rajiv Gandhi by describing him as a young dynamic leader of the nation, who gave direction to the youth of the country and brought about revolutionary step to strengthen democracy at grass root level. He asked the youth to follow the path shown by great leader.
Former minister RS Chib described Rajiv Gandhi as a visionary leader who led the nation to great achievements in various fields. He will be remembered for his youth policy to prepare them for the present day challenges. It was his efforts that India has emerged as leader in IT sector, Chib said.
Ravinder Sharma, chief spokesperson,  Manmohan Singh general secretary,  Indu Pawar- president Mahila Congress also paid rich tributes to late Gandhi.
Many party leaders  and ex- corporators, district and block functionaries paid rich tributes. They included   Krishan Lal Gupta, JL Koul,  Ashwani Puri, Suresh Bargotra,  Ricky Dalotra,  Dr Rama Kant Khajuria,  Madan Lal Malagar,  Mian Nazir Ahmed, Gourav Chopra, Rajinder Singh Jamwal, Vijay Malhotra,  PD Singh, RP Magotra,  SD Sharma, Yudvir Singh,  Kulbushan Sharma, Pawan Sharma,  Sardar Singh, Pardeep Bhalla, PK Bhagat,  Gopal Sharma,  Satpal Spolia, Meenakshi Devi, Anil Kohli, Jatinder Singh and others.
In Srinagar, Congress office also, the J&K Pradesh Congress Committee paid floral tributes to former Prime Minister Late Rajiv Gandhi. The speakers described him an inspiration for all the generations to come and said the assassination of former Prime Minister was an irreparable loss, which will never be replaced by anything.
He was a man of high values, visionary and an upright personality, who never disappointed any section of the people while having remained committed to the cause of serving people to the best of his ability. The departed leader introduced Panchayat Raj in the country in order to empower people, which proved a turning point in the development of people especially poor and down trodden sections from grass- root level, they said.
The meeting was presided over by District president Srinagar Irfan Naqib and it was attended by spokesperson Farooq Andrabi, general secretaries Surinder Singh Channi, Shameema Iqbal, Senior Leaders Abdul Gani Khan, Mohd Sultan, DCC president Ganderbal Sahil Farooq and others.
Similar functions were held at Kathua (Dayala Chak) led by Subhash Gupta (Ex-MLC), Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch and various other places across the state in this connection.
Meanwhile, the students, faculty members of the Management of Rajiv Gandhi Memorial College of Education, Kathua also paid floral tributes to Late Rajiv Gandhi in his birth anniversary. Anu Dogra, chairperson of the college recalled the contribution of the departed leader in the field of IT, empowerment of  Panchayats  and other fields.  Principal, Dr G P Sachdeva , Dr Bandhana Bhasin  (HOD M.Ed) and Dr A K Malhotra also spoke on the occasion.
