SRINAGAR, Nov 3: Kashmir valley is in the grip of cold wave after higher reaches of the region received fresh snowfall and the Meteorological Department has predicted rains and more snow on Wednesday and Thursday over the most parts of the State.
A MeT official told Excelsior that the Afarwat Mountains of Gulmarg in North Kashmir received fresh snowfall. The upper reaches along Srinagar-Leh highway at Drass, Zojila and Sonamarg also received snow while as the light rains lashed Srinagar and its adjoining areas overnight and today in the afternoon.
The fresh snowfall and rains plunged the mercury here with Srinagar recording 16.5 degrees maximum temperature compared to 18.9 yesterday. Gulmarg recorded a minimum of -0.5 degrees due to fresh spell of snowfall, the MeT official said.
“There is forecast of light to moderate rains over most parts of the State for two days. During the course of time, the higher reaches would also receive snow and the temperature would drop further,” the MeT official said.
Unlike past, the Valley upper reaches received moderate to heavy snow in October. With the indications of harsh weather, the people of Valley have started their preparations in advance to face the five month long winter that paralyzes the whole region.
