SRINAGAR, Aug 25: Minister for Health and Medical Education Bali Bhagat and his Deputy Asiea Naqash today faced major embarrassment in an official meeting when Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed dismay over poor functioning of both the Super Specialty Hospitals and non-availability of essential medicines in other major health institutions of the State.
Reviewing the process on key projects besides medical supplies and other services of Health and Medical Education Department, the Chief Minister expressed dismay over the non-functioning of Super Specialty Hospitals.
“I am not satisfied with the state of affairs in these two premier health institutions of the State”, she added creating embarrassment for both the Health Ministers as well as officers of the Health and Medical Education Department, who were also present in the meeting.
She further said, “I have come to know that in several health institutions including Government Medical Colleges and Hospitals even essential medicines are not available and patients are suffering a lot”.
She directed the Health and Medical Education Department to ensure availability of all essential medicines at the hospitals besides rendering selfless service by the medicos. “The department should ensure that the respective Heads purchase the requisite medicine from the Medical Supplies Corporation well in time and in no case should the delays or shortages be countenanced”, she added.
The Chief Minister directed for redoubling the efforts to improve the functioning of both the Super Specialty Hospitals. She also directed for improving the cleanliness level at the G B Pant Hospital for better results.
She also reviewed the pace of setting up one model hospital in each constituency with improved facilities and specialization. She directed for pacing up work on several trauma hospitals on the National Highway so that the injured don’t have to travel long distances for specialised treatment.
The Chief Minister also issued directions for optimal usage of health centres at Sanatnagar, Chhanapora and Eidgah by augmenting the facilities and manpower, thereby reducing the burden on tertiary care hospitals. She also asked for rationalisation of super specialists and specialists for better patient care and service delivery at District Hospitals.
She also reviewed the pace of work on the five Medical Colleges being set up in the State and was informed that the land acquisition process in case of two AIIMS in the State was in the advanced stage and a large chunk of land at both these places has been transferred. Besides, some preliminary works like water supply, power, road connectivity etc have either been started or are about to be started at these two places.
Mehbooba Mufti directed for setting up of a committee for searching staff for these Medical Colleges and AIIMS so that operationalization of these institutes doesn’t get delayed.
She was informed that creation of staff for the five Medical Colleges and many Nursing Colleges in the State was in the advanced stage and would be done before the completion of works at these institutes.
Mehbooba Mufti also reviewed the work progress on some key projects like 200 bedded Hospital at Gandhi Nagar and Bemina which, she was informed, are in final stages of completion. She also reviewed the status of Unani Hospital at Ganderbal and Ayurvedic College at Jammu which too are progressing towards completion. She was informed that the PET Scan facility at the SKIMS would be made functional by the end of this year.
Vice Chairman, Medical Supplies Corporation, Subhash Jandyal; Chief Secretary, B B Vyas; Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Rohit Kansal; Principal Secretary, Health & Medical Education, Dr Pawan Kotwal; Director, SKIMS, Prof  A G Ahangar; Principals of GMC, Srinagar and Jammu; Principals of GDC, Srinagar and Jammu; Directors of Health Services, Kashmir and Jammu and other senior officers were present in the meeting.
