Clashes in Pantha Chowk, 6 injured

Srinagar, Jan 12: At least six people including two policemen were injured during clashes in the outskirts of Srinagar in Pantha Chowk area as police fired scores of tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters who had blocked the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway over the killing of a local militant.
Hundreds of people today came out in Pantha Chowk area to attend the funeral of top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) commander, Sajjad Ahmad Bhat, who was gunned down last evening in Zakura area of Srinagar.
People gathered this morning at Zewan for the funeral of the Sajjad. Before the funeral, a procession attended by large number of people including women was taken out.
The mourners attempted to hold the funeral along Srinagar-Jammu National Highway but a large contingent of police intercepted the procession holding body of the militant commander and resorted to heavy teargas shelling.
Soon after holding funeral of the militant commander at a local ground, hundreds of youths yet again attempted to march towards National Highway but they were intercepted by police again. Police fired tear gas on youth who retaliated by pelting stones, triggering clashes.
A police official said two persons received injuries in the clashes while at least 4 protesters were also injured.
A complete shutdown was observed in Pantha Chowk, Pampore, Zewan and adjoining areas against the Sajjad’s killing.  Sajjad, who was killed last evening was one of the oldest militants associated with LeT.
Meanwhile, the shutdown over the demand of installing militant insignia today entered 14th day in South Kashmir’s Pulwama Town and its adjoining areas.
The shops, commercial establishments and offices remained closed in the Town while the transport was also off the roads. The town wore a deserted look throughout the day but the day passed off peacefully.
